Supporting Legacy Systems
The migration of legacy applications from Windows XP to Windows 7 can present problems. Many legacy applications that are required to support the continuation of the enterprise business are currently run under Windows XP. They will not run on Windows Vista or Windows 7 without full administrator access to the local machine. This is due to the Windows User Account Control process (UAC), shipped with Vista and Windows 7, preventing applications from running under the administrator account that Windows XP would otherwise allow.

Applications that have been written to access certain folders on the local hard drive or registry settings under Windows XP will fail to run when UAC is enabled. These applications may be well trusted in the organisations using them but cannot run in a "Least Privilege" environment.

The Elevation Management System (EMS) from Secure Management Systems enables system administrators to allow users to run these legacy applications on Windows Vista/Windows 7 with the necessary privileges. By utilising our controlled application, administrators can be confident that no additional administrative access need be given to the end user as they are only able to run the applications allowed by the central controlling function. As all elevation is handled by the EMS, the user will not have to answer a UAC privilege prompt nor will they need to be given any additional rights.

This allows operation for these legacy applications while maintaining a full "Least Privilege" locked down desktop infrastructure. In addition, a process running under the control of our system will be running natively with no need for virtualisation technology resulting in improved application performance
